Redpoll
There are lots of sub-species of redpoll, but I am not expert enough to say which this is. When I am told by a hardbitten birdwatcher pro, then I shall amend the title. He was on the shore with a pal at Scapa Bay.
The snow is deep, for Orkney at least. I walked uphill to Catty Maggies quarry, then onto the bridle path that heads toward Scapa. Not too many birds around. Missed a shot when a group of snipe wheeled toward me and I froze (appropriately). They came within fifteen feet, but I just didn't get the camera out in time. Seems they don't like the snow. I walked out along Scapa shore and photographed a man going out to his lobster pots. It seemed rather late, but he was safely back at the pier when I passed by.
