Catch a Falling Star

My wife won this bit of space rock in a competition - a tiny meteorite It is very cold, metallic and is magnetic - I guess its mostly made of iron judging by the reddish colour but I wonder what else is in it. How far did it travel before it hit earth? Was it always just a rock or once part of a planet? Or even the melted crushed remains of alien space craft from millions of years ago.
