World AIDS Day
Ok...not technically my photo, but its my camera and I'm in the photo!!
Today is World AIDS Day and this is part of what the projects that I work with did to publicise it. Today, amongst other things, was a football match held at Kathmandu University, (which is bizarrely near Dhulikhel...), involving students of KU, People Living With HIV or AIDS (PLHAs) and staff of local HIV/AIDS projects. (Plus a random VSO volunteer!)
Here's why. (An extract from my notes to try and secure funding for this...)
The football tournament is being held at Kathmandu University as part of the the celebration of World AIDS day 2010. It brings together 13 stakeholder organisations including local government offices and NGOs to play with and against PLHAs. We see this as a vehicle both to raise awareness of the impact of HIV & AIDS and to reduce stigma and discrimination by enabling PLHAs to play sport within the wider community.
Sport (and football in particular) is a vehicle for bringing people together and we believe that this tournament will contribute to demonstrating a united community response to PLHAs and will strengthen networks within the Kavre district.
