Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Buildings old and new

Yesterday's blue skies were still here this morning after a very cold night.
The buildings in the photograph are from very different eras; the house is currently under construction but the buildings behind and to the left date back to at least the late 18th century.
The old buildings were originally a warehouse or granary but now house a joiner's workshop. The warehouse dates from the time that Newburgh was a navigable port with a quay, the remains of which can be seen to the right of the photograph. Grain was brought down the river Ythan on barges and then transferred to larger coastal vessels for export to elsewhere. The ships had brought coal and fertiliser which were taken back up river on the barges, for distribution to inland farming communities.
