Making a Christmas cake

This is my first attempt at food photography. I took 97 frames, and this was the only one worth keeping. It was a useful lesson.

I was shooting in the kitchen in the evening. The light was poor, which meant a slow shutter speed (1/50), and a wide open aperture (f/5.6), which reduced depth of field options. I could have used a tripod, but there simply wasn't room in the busy kitchen.

Cooking seems sedate, but I had to move quickly to shoot the actual baking. This is because good cooks don't muck about, so there's no time to leisurely set up shots.
