Sprouting in the Winter

We eat a lot of scallion, so my mom likes to take the bulb section and plunk them into the group so they grow their leaves out, for more fresh scallion.
My mom stuck these into a pie plate with soil and gave them some water, and they started growing even though our house is so cold.
