Taste Life Twice

Peruvian pup

We had a short flight from Cusco to Lima this morning, a quick lunch, then toured another Incan site with archeologist Willy Cock (no, I'm not making up his name), who has made record-breaking discoveries and has been featured in two PBS documentaries and in a National Geographic magazine cover story. The site had a small museum of artifacts, and was home to a hairless Peruvian dog that had recently given birth to five pups: three wrinkly little guys like this one (yes, he is wearing a small poncho) and two normally-furred babies. A strange and delightful little bunch of pups.

Have I mentioned how many dogs we've seen in Peru? In Cusco especially, they are everywhere. Roaming the streets, picking treats out of piles of trash, curled up for little siestas in the doorways of homes. We have been nervous seeing so many in the roads and dodging between cars (which drive as though there are no rules, lanes, or other cars around them, though the streets are incredibly congested). However, I am happy to report we haven't seen a single doggie that has met his demise in the road.

Not looking forward to the 3:00 a.m. wakeup call for our flight home tomorrow, nor the cold (and snow flurries??) I've heard are waiting for us. But I am happy and fortunate to have had such a wonderful week. See you soon, USA.
