After the night before . . .

We went to bed about the usual time last night, then I remembered about the meteor showers so we ended up standing at the bedroom roof light window, staring at the night sky until the wee small hours! It was amazing, with shooting stars coming every few minutes, well worth staying up for!

Sometimes clouds came across the sky and hardly anything was visible at all, then as the skies cleared suddenly the whole of the heavens lit up and there were stars everywhere. What struck me was that there were so many that they seemed layer after layer of them, reddish ones, whiter ones, yellower ones, satellites and ones dropping out of the sky, fading as they did so.

One of the things I have always loved about Orkney is that we do have such huge skies, day and night, and the stars and northern lights are so brilliant - literally! I have never learnt much about star gazing and can only identify the odd one, but having someone who is very keen and knowledgeable pointing them out is a big help.

Spent most of today knitting socks. Trying to work out how long it takes to knit them if I am doing nothing else. Sadly, nearly 6 hours per sock . . . . . !
