Christingle

Christingle means 'Christ-Light' and Christingle services apparently began in Germany in 1747, to help teach children about Jesus. The Christingle has four parts:

- an orange, representing the world
- a red ribbon surrounding the orange, indicating the blood/love of Christ
- a lighted candle, symbolising Jesus, the Light of the World
- four cocktail sticks bearing dried fruit or sweets, signifying the four seasons and the fruits of the earth and God's good gifts

At the beginning of December our church, like many, holds a special Christingle service to raise money for The Children's Society and the candlelight is certainly a beautiful sight. These particular ones were carried very carefully around the church by the children at the end of tonight's wonderfully-performed and very funky nativity play!
