My Grandparents
There's two things on my window ledge that mean a lot to me. The first on the left which is being held up by the torch is a piece of embroidery my Granny Scott gave me when I was wee. It reads. "Keep your face always towards the sunshine and the shadows will fall behind" I hear this in my head every time i feel the sun on my face. My granny died of a horrific wasting cancer when i was about 8 and There is a picture of me draped across her knee a few years previous when we visited one Hogmany. I don't remember her well but i hear her laugh. I hate that I have a lingering memory of fear of visiting her. but i understand that it was a sick room in every sense of the word and i was very young. (I do remember she always gave us a sweetie as we left and i wonder if she did it to sweeten the memory because it worked a little.)
The second is a Poem i wrote in Primary one (age 4-5). This was sent to my Grandparents and my Granda had it framed. I didn't know this until it came back to me after he finally passed a few years ago. He must have been proud of it. I was the youngest of the grandchildren. his youngest's youngest. (He actually had Great Grandchildren older than me). I always had a connection with him. He had a really obscure sense of humour and I miss him so much.
