Google's new toy tool, Books Ngram Viewer, searches 500 billion words from 5.2 million digitized books and shows the occurrence of words against time from 1800 to 2000.

Comparing "photography" (blue line) and "pixel" (red line) shows up the pixel as a Jonny come lately only making a significant appearance in the 1970's .
