Wings appeal
As I was heading down the A41 today I realised I would be passing the RAF museum at Cosford. So I nipped in - it's free!
The Cold War Exhibition is fantastic. All 3 V bombers in there together with MIGs, a Lightning suspended vertically, an upside down Sabre F86 and loads of other great and beautiful aeroplanes designed to wreak havoc on their respective enemies. But forget about what they were made for. These machines are a perfect example of form following function and because of that they are more like works of art than the product of an industrial society. I'm glad my dad took me to air shows in the 60s so I could witness the spectacle of a Lightning climbing vertically, reheat glowing red, with a noise that you felt as much as heard.
The other sheds have loads of jets from the late 40s early 50s when research and development was racing ahead, producing thrilling silver darts that today look so sleek and nimble and futuristic compared to modern jets, overloaded with armament and avionics.
They are surely not only sublime works of art but also the ultimate toys for boys!
