Long Distance

I have passed this sculpture in Longford Town on many occasions, but I never stopped to read the inscription underneath.

It reads:
Dedicated to the memory of Pat Fitzgerald, Lisduff Hill, Longford.
Born 1847.

World Champion and Record Holder for the Six Day Race, Madison Square Garden, 1884.

Died Long Island, New York, 1900.

So many people (including myself) never realise that as we walk from Tesco, we pass the shadow of a giant.
