Crystal Skulls

Throughout the world there are several crystal skulls which are normally claimed to be Mayan or Aztec in origin. The creme de la creme in crystal skulls is the Mitchell-Hedges, supposedly discovered in 1924 by Anna Mitchell Hedges in what is now Belize. It has been claimed to be over 3000 years old and to have taken 200-300 years to polish to perfection with fine sand. It is carved from a single piece of crystal, has a moveable jaw and is a perfect anatomical reproduction of a human skull, including the lumps and bumps. It has also been thought to be German in origin and be from the mid to late 19th century.

Some interesting claims have been made for the skulls, my favourite is that when all 13 skulls (for 13 there are) are brought together it will bring out the end of the world. This will occur on December 21st 2012. You have been warned.

I have been lucky enough to view the Mitchell-Hedges skull. I saw it being unpacked and the thing that struck me was how clear it was. It was like water. When lit the reflections are amazing. Whatever the truth of its origin (and I fear that has been lost in the mists of time) it has to be the most exquisite carved gem in existance. I think it is quite sad that the person or people who carved it will never get recognition for their achievement. I'd like to think they would really enjoy the mystery and legends that surround it.

The skull in the photo is owned by my husband and is not claimed to be 3000 years old or to have the power to end the world.
