Hoad Hill, Ulverston

The mock lighthouse on Hoad Hill above Ulverston is actually 430ft above sea level (plus 100ft more for the structure itself). I'd seen the monument from afar many times and (climbing the hill for the first time today) was staggered at how large it was up close. This was a wonderful short trek and the stormy clouds didn't manage to obscure the sunlight. This is a monument to John Barrow built in 1850. "Who's John Barrow?" I hear you ask... Apparently one of Lancashire's heroes - naval officer and explorer par excellence. The tower itself wasn't open today but the views were stunning enough - snow covered Lakeland fells and Balckpool tower. On a clear day you can apparently see the Snowdonian mountains as well across Morecambe Bay.
