Pottery
"Risk plays a major part in the work of celebrated potter Steve Fullmer. He explores clay like a pioneer hungry to uncover new territory and as soon as he has satisfied his curiosity he moves onto another adventure. Primitive forms fascinate him and he seems hell-bent on stripping away the saleable advantages of functional design to track back into the past, soaking up age-old methods, and zen-like simplicity. You can tell that Steve Fullmer loves clay. He works mostly with earthenware because it is honest and old and has served craftspeople for hundreds of years. "It's a fascinating material," he says. "You mould it, colour it, fire it and end up with a tactile creation that leaves unique marks long after your existence." He enjoys the experimentation with techniques and the leftover tones of combined colours which highlight rather than hide the clay beneath."
This piece and the statement about Steve reminds me that we only grow when we take risks and keep moving on rather then staying in our comfort zone. I think I bought this about 20 years ago and it was seen as being very different then.
