January sunshine
It was cold but bright in Liverpool this afternoon, which made my task of photographing the Liverpool King's Regiment Memorial in St John's Gardens extremely difficult as the figures are nearly always in shadow. I decided not to give up and snap a cute dog instead, but to follow the introductory advice in my photography book - to visualise the image you want to see, then try and set the camera to achieve it, even if it's not technically perfect. It took a few goes, but I was quite pleased with this in the end, showing the contrast between the sombre memorial in the garden and the brighter city centre scene behind. The detail is better in the large version.
The memorial is by Sir William Goscombe John, who also designed the Port Sunlight one. It has the same New Sculpture influences, especially the flowing pile of battle flags, helmets etc. in the foreground. I'll come back to it another day as it is huge and there are many different elements.
