The Plight of the Plane Trees

As dusk falls over the Canal du Midi in Capastang, a large gap can be seen on the other side of the bank. Think Canal du Midi and you think plane trees for shade, for colour, for birds and for history. Acting like a guard of honour as the reassuring canal winds it's way across the vineyards

Sadly there is a disease which is affecting them, so great swathes are being removed. Consequently the banks have to be shored up by driving posts into the edge and then mud scraped up to dry out and make the banks firm again.

A sad site indeed.
