Cheerful railway stations?

Why are most railway stations cold and depressing? I like Waverly in Edinburgh and even Glasgow central is not too bad - Kings Cross you can watch life passing by - but ABerdeen and Glasgow queen street are always so empty and bleak or is it I just spend too much time in them?
