The Jesus Nut
This shows the hub assembly of a Canadian Navy helicopter. The Jesus Nut (aka Jesus Pin) is the topmost item in this photo, with the hole through it (the hole is used to lift the entire helicopter).
The story goes, maybe ex-Vietnam era, that if that nut detaches, there is nothing left for the pilot to do but pray to Jesus, as his rotors are no longer a part of the helicopter, and he is in a rapidly plummeting cage.
In this mothballed helicopter, the rotors are designed to fold back to conserve space on an aircraft carrier. They are in the folded state.
I spent a lot of time in helicopters while I was a geologist in the Yukon. A friend of mine once described a helicopter as "a whole bunch of nuts and bolts flying in close formation." Definitely not organic. And a helicopter pilot is someone who would rather risk his life than work (that from a pilot).
