St Mary the Virgin, Seaham
This church in Seaham, Durham county is thought to be over 900 years old. The
information board in front of it said 7th to 8th century but it looks Norman. An
examination of the walls by antiquarians brought the older date into consideration
and it is thought that an original Saxon building was built over after the Norman
conquest. Unfortunately Durham was not included in the Domesday book and
therefore no mention of St Mary's is to be found in it so we can't really be sure.
The sundial in the photograph is much more modern, being from 1773.
