A Quaker Martyr
Mary Dyer (c.1611-1660) was hanged on Boston Common for the crime of being a Quaker in Massachusetts. Her story is dramatic and inspiring. It was par for the course then, in that place, for the authorities to attack, vilify, and kill any female intellectual.
This statue, about twice life-sized, stands just inside the entrance to the Freinds Center and Fifteenth Street Meeting House at 15th & Cherry Streets, Philadelphia. One good feature of our city is that if you have any Quaker-related questions, it won't take long to find the answer.
