You may not think so but these tomatoes illustrate an interesting Cold War point. The variety is called Paul Robeson and named after arguably the greatest Afro-American citizen of the 20th century. They are a black variety, the colour goes beyond red to a deep chocolate colour, and were bred in the Soviet Union for short summers. What's the connection? Robeson was obviously black, denied a passport during the Mcarthy period, fought for civil rights all of life and won the Stalin Peace Prize. Yet he's been effectively ' cleansed' from US modern history. At least we've got the tomatoes.
Oh I nearly forgot - I got the seeds from an American company - ironic?
