Rhodes Cottage, Boschendal, South Africa

In 1896 arch imperialist Cecil Rhodes, dominant in South African diamonds through the De Beers company and effective ruler of Rhodesia (modern Zimbabwe and Zambia) through his British South Africa Company was forced to resign as Cape Prime Minister after the disastrous Jameson Raid failed to overthrow the Transvaal Government.

In 1897 he started large scale fruit farming in the Drakenstein Valley. He commissioned Sir Herbert Baker to design this country retreat on the farm, as a simple country cottage with typical Cape features.

The first guest was Sir Alfred Milner, the Governor of Cape Colony, and arguably the designer of the Boer War.
