Edinburgh Winter

Carlton Hill with Nelson Monument, Edinburgh, from our flat, I used my binoculars again with my little Sony cybershot. Think the Sepia looks very Victoriana reflecting the origins of the monument.

Carlton Hill has a long and varied history, in summary, once a leper colony, prison and execution place. In 1456 King James 2nd of Scotland allowed it to be used for "Jousts and Tournaments", prior to this, Mary Queen of Scots used it for Falconry tournaments and during one of these was supposed to have lost her Diamond signet seal ring ! Each time I walk up here I keep a look out you never Know !!

Nowadays the hill is used for the Beltane festival of fire, and the Hindhu festival of Dusshera.

Each year it is the setting among the seven hills for the spectacular New Year Fireworks and Viking long ship burning, it is a spectacular sight from our window.
