Pillars of the Community!

These pillars were rescued from the garden of Argyle House, Hope Lane, off Portobello High Street, Edinburgh. They are made of press-moulded blocks of Coade Stone, a process invented by Eleanor Coade(1773-1821). The designs on the smaller pillars are identical to those on the chimneys of Dalmey House, South Queensferry.

In 2006 the pillars were erected in the new Community Garden on the prom, using a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to Portobello Amenity Society with support from Portobello Community Council and the City of Edinburgh Council.
