BRACELET AND STONE TALISMAN -- ARTEFACTS NO. 8
Oh, dear, this is not good. I couldn't find a way of displaying items and tags at the same time. A toy clothes peg on an espresso glass is pretty desperate. A more patient person would see the day through in case something good turned up. The things are sitting on glass with a torch underneath, all too obviously.
The bracelet emerged from the dankness and mould with the twine which held it together rotted. It fell apart in my hands. I believe it is mostly amber. I think the tag is legible enough but it says: "Ornament and only clothing of a Nubian girl - given to me by Miss Barrry - her brother got it from the girls wrist giving her in exchange a few Brass Buttons. -- 1854." That's too early for the ill-fated rescue attempt of General Gordon but the Sudan was part of the British Empire before the Mahdi chased them out. Miss Barry's brother was no doubt in the Sudan in the service of Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, and had brass buttons to spare. One does hear the expression "naked Nubians" so it must be true. They wore bracelets but not a stitch otherwise.
The other tag says: Talisman against witchcraft found in sea sand from Carnoustie. On the back it says: "Found by E. M. T."
Update: Thanks to ifnotforthis and Appreciation for getting the word I couldn't read -- clothing. Grace's link to Nuba tribes /The Wonderful Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl is very enlightening, too.
For the record: Sunny up here but massive fog in the valley. + 13 C. Sunrise: 7:30; sunset 5:35
