The floodgates are opening at last.

Another meeting with another health expert today about Tom's condition.

Today's topic was sleep.

Part of ASD is that apparently the brain doesn't produce enough melatonin. This is a natural hormone which forms part of the system that regulates the sleep-wake cycle by chemically causing drowsiness and lowering the body temperature.

(You see you learn something new every day).

Anyway Tom doesn't produce enough of it. That would explain why on average it takes the poor wee mite three hours to get to sleep. This obviously has a huge knock on effect as he is knackered in the mornings and so the cycle continues.

The pediatrician has started him on a course of Melatonin supplements to try and help him sleep. Could be a fluke but the first night and he was asleep after ten minutes. Wait to see what tomorrow brings.

One worrying thing though, the brand name for it is Kid Nap.
