New urban landscape 1

George Georgiou: "New urban spaces are being created all the time. Explore the interaction and impact between these modern landscapes and the people that occupy them".

Vast empty spaces are a prominent feature of new urban landscapes. Spaces of asphalt, concrete or grass, like playing fields, golf courses, lots between apartment blocks, stadium concourses, freeways, malls, parking lots. Many of these spaces are used infrequently, and for single purposes.

This photo was taken on a concrete concourse leading to a stadium in Wellington, New Zealand. For two hours each fortnight the concourse is filled with people walking to and from a game. But mostly it's empty, or nearly so.

I'm interested in the way people interact with this space. They walk along its edges, or hurry across it. Occasionally people run around it, but it's a hard surface which traps heat and glare, and is exposed to the sun and the wind.

Like freeways, parking lots and suburban malls, the concourse is a place of transit, not a place to linger.
