blue jay visits

My first bird blip!
Yesterday I picked up a used 70-300mm Nikkor zoom lens. It does not auto focus on my Nikon D3100. Managed 3 shots of this blue jay from my breakfast table. The other two were fuzzy... one just a tail. Maybe I should set the shutter speed to 1/1000 or faster and concentrate on focusing.
