King of Punk

Red-breasted merganser (Mergus serrator) male.

Seen in Kirkcaldy inner harbour, evening light, reflection off Hutchison's Flour Mill, colour from the setting sun.


Rather at the limits of my camera. which was at full zoom (840mm equiv)
Hand held (though elbows resting on railings) at 1/125 sec, f5.8 (ISO 400).

The bird was almost 50 yards away.

I actually went down supposedly just for 10 mins to blip the breakwater and some bollards - ended up spending an hour and a half there watching the birds (r-b mergansers, goldeneye ducks, eider ducks, oystercatchers etc.). Cold but enjoyable.
