Gillipaw's Journal

August Sander Exhibition, Dean Gallery, Edinburgh

I had much enjoyed the lecture yesterday on the photographer August Sander (1876-1964), so off we went to view the exhibition of over 170 prints. Individuals and groups of people, classified by occupation and position in society, Sander's ambition was to document the German people in a project which he called "People of the Twentieth Century".

At the lecture, we heard that all the prints were produced from original glass plates by his Grandson Gerd Sander, who had accompanied his grandfather on photo shoots, and knew some of the people in the images. The show runs until 10 July 2011, admission free, and is well worth a visit.

My Blip is a detail of the stonework outside the Dean Gallery, which was originally built as an orphanage in 1830.

Thinking of my Mother in Law today, four years ago since she left us so suddenly.
