Chief Little Turtle and the Cincinnati skyline
Sunday
After several days earlier in the week with high temperatures only in the low 20s (F), today the thermometer climbed into the 50s, under blue skies and sunshine! Thursday, we're even supposed to reach 60, though with clouds and rain! After an early lunch, we went to exercise at the "Y", then headed downtown to enjoy the sunshine by the Ohio River. We crossed the Ohio into Covington Kentucky, and strolled along the river admiring the various statues. The one in my picture depicts Chief Little Turtle, or Mishikinakwa (c. 1747 ? July 14, 1812), who was a chief of the Miami Indian tribe in what is presently Indiana, and one of the most successful Native American military leaders of his era. During the 1780s he led raids against American settlements in Kentucky, fighting on the side of the British. In the years leading up to the War of 1812, however, he became an advocate for peace with the U.S. The sculpture was created by Robert Koepnick of Lebanon, Ohio in 1988 to remember the first settlers of the Ohio Valley, the native Americans.
