Mr Sulu, Warp 6!

My mum always struggles to understand exactly what it is I do at work. She knows I'm a vision mixer, and she sort of understands what that involves but I don't think she really grasps just how complicated it can be.

The closest she got to getting it was when I showed her a picture of the vision mixing desk and her face lit up and she beamed "Ah I know why you like that job! You like to pretend you're flying the starship Enterprise don't you!"

Of course I denied it even though you should never lie to your mum no matter how well she knows what a geek you are.

But I can't deny it any longer - yes, I am a Trekkie. And yes, when I press that button marked 'Fire', I pretend that photon torpedoes are exploding against Borg shields. And when I pull up on the fader, I'm beaming an away team down to the planet below.

Just don't tell my mother. I hate it when she's right...
