Rainy Day in Oregon

Peak Cemetery

We're logging near the back side of Marys Peak. In 1898 a small settlement was established near here called Peak. Members of the community thought the road to Newport on the coast would come through there. It didn't. In 1917 the post office closed when the highway to Newport bypassed Peak. The town dwindled and now there is nothing left but the cemetery.

Windy and snow mixed with rain today, my hubby and I drove through the forest in search of the cemetery. We found it after a few wrong turns. About 150 feet off the road. There are less than twenty graves there.

The first picture is of a wooden arrow nailed to a tree pointing the way to the path to the cemetery. The second picture is a portion of the path. You can see a marker in the distance. The third picture is of a handcarved headstone. I took it from the back because of its interesting shape. The date on the front was 1846 - 1916.
