American mailboxes are the sure sign of a 'white settler' (is that racist?) in these parts. Most common are the white, but plain steel is the coolest. Second in popularity are the French style - green enamel with a jaunty wee French post horn on the front.

The 'posties' love it - they don't have to trail down through sodden fields in the worst of weather, fighting off dogs and assorted cattle to get the mail through - they just pop it in at the top of the lane and drive off.

Everyone should have one. I must get mine up - another job I've been putting off.
