Cutting the keys

One of the first signs of spring in Ottawa is not the return of birds or the appearance of snowdrops; but, is cutting the keys in the Rideau River. They cut long narrow strips out of the ice so that when it breaks up it doesn't form ice dams but floats away. At a certain point they will do some blasting to speed the process. All this to avoid flooding.
