Grey heron.
Took the kids to the British Wildlife Centre in West Sussex today, which is not very far from us 'as the crow flies'. A brilliant place, with lots of native animals and every half an hour the keepers give talks on a particular species so there's lots to learn as well as see.
This was so far away that I thought it was a pigeon at first, until I zoomed in. Although this nest looks quite small (maybe it's a work in progress?) the trees next to it were filled with much larger ones - apparently herons like to live together in these 'heronries'. We often get a heron in our garden but I've never managed to photograph it. I wonder if this is where it lives?
