......and, if you go large and read the text, that's apparently very nearly a promise......even though I suspect super-tight elastic could have played a significant role in the 'built to stay in place' business and also could have nipped and chaffed in all the wrong places (and come to think of it that ruched nylon probably left unsightly marks after a day on a hot, sandy beach....but how about we gloss over that bit) but you just have to admire that superb artwork. A fashion illustration from a 1950's copy of Harpers Bazaar......procured from I can't quite remember where or when.

PS.....I feel a bit guilty about posting this seeing as someone else did all the hard work.....but in my defense I'm now off to strip stubborn wallpaper from flaky-pastry bathroom walls.....definitely without a safety net......and possibly wearing nylon......or, then again, maybe not......I might opt for that little Crimplene number......
