This evening I was extremely fortunate to be invited by a very good friend to be his guest at a cocktail party held in The Queen's Guard Chamber, Windsor Castle, in the presence of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.
Here are some facts about the occasion.
1. No cameras allowed, and mobiles must be switched off at all times.
2. You walk on history through the castle grounds past the keep, to the Armoury entrance.
3. The walls are decorated with large collections of swords, pistols, muskets, bayonets and cutlasses all forming the most extraordinary patterns.
4. There are glass cabinets with all manner of spoils of war against the walls.
5. St Georges Hall - rebuilt since the fire on Friday 20th November 1992 was open for us to walk through, it is awesomely beautiful.
6. Champagne and Canapes mmmm: mini lamb-burgers, smoked trout mousse, chicken bits on sticks, prawns, and best of all mustard and honey glazed sausages.
7. Prince Philip knows how to work a room, he spoke to everyone.
8. He is handsome, charming, articulate and wears very shiny shoes.
9. The star item on display - for me- is the bullet that killed Nelson, now mounted in a large pendant - it's a bit bent - the bullet that is.
10. This blip is of the round tower, taken from the car park, as we arrived, as you can see the royal standard is not flying, but when we came out it was. The Queen is home for the weekend.
Thank you Derek for a wonderful evening
