Grandad and His Grandfather
We found this picture, with its curved glass and ornate gold-leafed plaster frame, in the basement of my grandmother's house in Shenandoah, Iowa.
The baby is my father, Wendell Smith, and he is sitting on his grandfather's knee. He was a Swedish gentleman farmer named Nordstrom. The family farms in Iowa are still owned by my brother, though none of us live out there any more.
This is a hand-tinted photograph and must have been made in the early 1900s. It is unsigned.
