Tunnel Of Love
The 424 foot long Saltersford Tunnel on the Trent and Mersey canal was built in 1772 and is a Grade 2 listed. The tunnel is narrow and can only take one boat at a time and it is not straight so you are not able to see if a boat is coming the other way. Entry to the tunnel is on a timed basis, 20 minutes in every hour, so boats have to wait for the alloted time before entering.
In the days of horse drawn boats the horses would have taken the path off to the right up and over the tunnel while the boatmen would have "legged" it through the tunnel.
