After over a year in Haiti, I decided to start a blip to document this amazing country (which blows me away on a regular basis).
I have been working in the exciting overlap between health and microfinance with the largest MFI in Haiti. In the next week I will begin a consultancy with the British Red Cross, managing the monitoring and evaluation of health interventions, relocation plans, and demographics of La Piste IDP camp.
I wish I had started blipping 2 years ago, when I left my public health job in DC and began my travels. There is so much I would have liked to document in the dozen countries I visited (throughout South America, the Carribbean, French Polynesia and the Middle east).
Of all these places, I found myself falling utterly in love with Haiti. What I love most about this country:
1. Haitians- who are easily the friendliest most joyful people you will ever encounter, despite facing constant challenges (just in the past 2 years- political corruption, devastating eathquake, hurricanes and a cholera epidemic)
2. Ti machann- the street merchants, who pepper roads of Haiti. These tens of thousands of women (predominantly) are the backbone of the Haitian economy and often the sole bread-winners for their family.
3. Kreyol- a beautiful and expressive language. A mix of 18th century colonial french and a myriad of African dialects- my favorite language yet.
My hope for this blip is that it will help me connect with family and dear friends back home (who I miss greatly and think of on a daily basis) and also keep in touch with all the dynamic glob-trotting friends I've made along the way.
Help make this connection two-sided: please leave comments or even start your own Blip!
