I grew up among photographer pals of my father. I can still remember the flap of the Roleiflex camera used by Morris Allan father of Doug Allan the wildlife underwater cameraman. I was probably 14-years old when I bough my first camera - a used Canon.
In my early twenties I began a new chapter in Japan (1980), where I lived permanently for over thirty years, befriending a well regarded film cameraman and photographer. After just a few years I was able to accumulate everything I wanted: two Minolta SR-T bodies, a couple of prime lenses (didn't stop there!), Pentax spot meter, average meter, home-developing kit and enlarger. With film and printing paper half the cost compared to in the UK, bliss!
Now, what can I say? Post processing digital images with "Darktable" is different for sure - it's more convenient. What I notice is that an upgrade in the 80's could be choosing to spend more money on a better celluloid whereas now an upgrade involves buying a new camera body. Ouch!
After a long stint running my own business in Japan, my last work gig was lecturing Computer Forensics and Ethical Hacking to Abertay University associate degree students at Fife College. Now, I'm retired.
