St Andrew

I returned to St Bennet's Chapel this afternoon and a member of staff kindly let me in to look at the stained glass.

Gabiel Loire's numerous post-war installations feature in, amongst others, Salisbury Cathedral, St George's Cathedral in Cape Town and the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedachtniskirche in Berlin.

His impressionistic work pioneered the use of thick, strong, 'slab glass' techniques, and in 1946 he founded the Ateliers Loire in Chartres. This studio continues to be run by his son Jacques and his grandsons.

There are several works by Loire père et fils in St Bennet's. Contrary to what it says on the Visitscotland website, the building is not normally open to the public, but it has featured as a venue on Doorsopen Day.
