Morning has broken

What a wonderful way to start the day! I needed to go into the neighbouring town early this morning, but landed up arriving rather too early and found everything shut. Everything except the church yard, which I imagine is always open, so that is where I went. Not a living soul around , although I imagine plenty of other souls were floating about.

It is one of the prettiest church yards I have ever been into. The grounds are lovingly but not rigidly looked after. Ivy and moss has been allowed to grace some of the more ancient headstones which gives them a much softer, gentler appearance. Two massive Yew trees guard the side entrance to the Church. They stand so close to the great door that they look as if they are part of the stone work or that the church has somehow sprung forth from them. I will post a picture of them sometime soon.

On looking up the Stonework has been intricately carved into beautiful patterns, angels and hideous gargoyles and grotesques. The Gargoyles have spouts from their mouths. Gargoyles are apparently used as a means of projecting water from the roof in such a way that it does not fall and lie near to the walls or foundations of a building. The grotesques are just for decoration.

Two little birds sat on the ridge of the church roof and chatted for ages about this and that and this Blackbird was more interested in finding his breakfast, and later scrabbling around in the ivy to worry about me photographing him.

When I first walked up the steps and in to the church yard the Blackbird had a friend with him. The sight of two Blackbirds sitting together is said to be a symbol of peace and is a good omen, and that's good enough for me!
