Colonnade at the Grand Palais
This afternoon we were at the Grand Palais in Paris, to attend an excellent exhibition entitled "Nature et idéal: le Paysage (landscape) à Rome, 1600-1650". Key artists included were Annibale Carracci, Poussin and Claude Lorrain.
[Early edit]: Of the 33 artists in the exhibition, only three were from Rome itself and 18 came from outside Italy. Nevertheless, pure landscape painting had a major flowering--probably the earliest--in Rome in the years following 1600.
This view is from the stairs leading to the second floor--I had never noticed it before.
It was drizzling when we emerged.
