A Least Tern's view of San Francisco
I took this a week ago but have had a weird problem getting into BF... I think it is cleared up.
This is a shot of protected habitat for least terns. These little migratory birds are considered threatened, since they have lost habitat to coastal development. They nest on flat surfaces without obstacles that block their view of approaching predators. SInce much of their historic nesting territory has been lost, they have started to claim airport runways, and section of runways have been set aside for them. This is a shot of their protected territory at the former naval air station in Alameda, Ca. We did some restoration work there last Sunday... the birds will show up fairly soon! Interesting view of San Francisco from another species' point of view!
