Costa's Hummingbird
This isn't the best photo I took today but it is the one I was most excited about. When I was taking a picture of a cactus with bright orange flowers this hummingbird flew by, stopping at the cactus and then lighting in a tree nearby. I've never seen a hummingbird with this bright purple throat, so even though it was too far for my camera to get a good shot I knew I had to get a picture. By cropping the photo at least you can see what this hummingbird looks like. I googled it when I got home and found out it a Costa's hummingbird and it prefers habitats in the desert where Joshua trees and cholla cactus grow. They are about 3.5 inches long which is a bit bigger than the hummingbirds I'm used to seeing. The males have a shimmering purple throat patch with much of the head the same color. I've never seen such a beautiful shade of purple on a bird. Females have a whitish throat and belly.
I like the convenience of my point and shoot camera but when I see something like this hummingbird I do wish I had a camera with a better lens. Maybe someday.
