Underneath the arches
Spence buildings at the university use simple architectural forms and traditional materials such as brick, copper and concrete.
This massive run of arches and brick support pillars runs under one of his largest and most monumental structures.
In winter it's a cold passageway - an escape only from rain. In the spring or summer it is cool. But mostly people don't walk through it.
We wanted to glass it in and make it more useful - but as a listed building it was protected, which is a pity since far fewer people get to enjoy the simple lines and curves.
This shot captures something of shape and movement of this 'cloister'. I was trying to get this without people, but one person wandered into the frame.
I quite liked the effect so went for this one with the person there. Not least it shows the scale of the place.
